On August 15, 2012, the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Bumbo International issued a joint voluntary recall of the company’s Bumbo Baby Seat product. According the notice, approximately 4 million of these units were sold in the U.S. from August 2003 to August 2012.
This is not the first time Bumbo International has issued a recall of Bumbo Baby Seat product. The company recalled 1 million Bumbo seats in October 2007 to add warnings against using the product on raised surfaces.
CPSC indicates that there is a hazard of babies maneuvering or falling out of the Bumbo seat, which can cause serious injury to an infant. After the October 2007 recall, CPSC and Bumbo International noted at least fifty incidents where a baby fell from a Bumbo seat when it was used on a raised surface. Of these incidents, nineteen of the infants sustained skull fractures. Both CPSC and Bumbo International also noted thirty-four incidents where an infant maneuvered or fell out of a Bumbo seat that had been placed on the floor or at an unidentified elevation, leading to skull fractures, bruises, bumps, and other injuries.
Consumers who have the recalled Bumbo Baby Seat are advised to cease using the product immediately until they have ordered the free repair kit provided by Bumbo. The free repair kit can be ordered on-line by visiting the company’s website. The kit includes a restraint belt that should be installed and used any time a child is in the seat. The company also continues to advise against using the product on elevated surfaces.
