Vioxx is a drug that doctors prescribed to thousands of people as a means of dealing with the pain that comes with arthritis. Some estimates indicate Vioxx generated $2.5 billion in annual sales for the drug's manufacturer, Merck.
But in September 2004, with evidence that using Vioxx increased patients' likelihood of heart attack and stroke, Merck pulled Vioxx off the market. There are questions about how much knew about the dangers of Vioxx and whether the company acted quickly enough.
Today, Merck is facing an estimated 13,000 lawsuits from people who once used Vioxx. In defending those cases, Merck has maintained that Vioxx caused an increased risk of cardiac damage only in those patients who took the drug for 18 months or longer. But new studies indicate problems may occur in patients who used Vioxx for as little as four months.
If you or a loved one used Vioxx, and you're concerned about possible health effects associated with the drug, you should speak with your doctor right away.
